Tendo, Yamagata
Venue: Tendo Oda no Sato History Museum and other city facilities
Feb 5 – Mar 22, 2026
In Tendo, a city famous for shogi (Japanese chess), approximately 1,370 hina dolls spanning from Edo-period Genroku and Kyoho styles to Showa-era oshie-bina are displayed across multiple facilities. The highlight is the rare 'oshie-bina' (pressed cloth dolls) passed down through the Sanada family, crafted using a distinctive layered-fabric technique that creates a three-dimensional effect — a nationally rare treasure. Visitors can tour venues including the Tendo Oda no Sato History Museum, Shogi-mura Tendo Tower, and Tendo Wine while admiring the gorgeous dolls from different historical periods. An Instagram photo contest adds modern appeal to this traditional event.
