This festival features approximately 3,000 paper hina dolls made from washi (Japanese paper), born from the spirit of frugality in the Usuki domain. During the Edo period, when displaying lavish hina dolls was prohibited in the Usuki domain, townspeople developed a unique tradition of handcrafting dolls from colorful washi paper. Now in its 21st year, this tradition continues with paper dolls displayed throughout the castle town. Workshops for making paper hina dolls (1,000 yen, about 2 hours) allow visitors to create their own washi dolls.
