Hina dolls across eras in pioneer buildings
Hokkaido Pioneer Village is an open-air museum featuring 52 relocated historical buildings from the Meiji to early Showa periods. During the Hinamatsuri season, 26 sets of hina dolls spanning from the Meiji era through the Heisei period are displayed throughout the buildings, offering visitors a fascinating look at how doll-decorating customs have evolved over the centuries. Guided tours led by curators explain the characteristics and historical context of each era's dolls. The unique combination of pioneer-era architecture, snowy Hokkaido landscapes, and traditional hina displays creates an atmosphere found nowhere else in Japan.
