Former Makabe Elementary School (main venue) and over 100 homes/shops in Makabe
Makabe, Sakuragawa, IbarakiKanto
Beautiful fusion of historic streets & dolls
In Makabe, a town preserving its historic Edo-period streetscape, over 100 homes and shops display hina dolls in the 22nd chapter of 'Wa no Kaze' (Japanese Breeze). The dolls displayed in atmospheric stone storehouses and machiya townhouses — many nationally registered cultural properties — create a beautiful harmony with the historic architecture, attracting over 70,000 visitors. The main venue at the former Makabe Elementary School hosts a large-scale exhibition, while visitors can stroll through surrounding lanes to enjoy displays in individual homes. Special buses run from Tsukuba Express Tsukuba Station on March weekends.
