Elegant dolls nurtured by safflower culture

About This Event

This festival celebrates the deep connection between Yamagata's safflower (benibana) trading heritage and hina doll culture. During the Edo period, wealthy safflower merchants brought elaborate hina dolls from Kyoto and Edo, and these treasured family heirlooms are now displayed across the city each spring. The main venue, Beni no Kura, hosts an exhibition of dolls from merchant families, while the Bunshokan (former prefectural office built in early Taisho era) and local hotels display rare Kyoho-era dolls. Visitors can enjoy Japanese sweet-making workshops and stamp rallies while strolling through the castle town. Now in its 16th year, this event beautifully showcases the intersection of safflower culture and hina doll traditions.
