In front of the main hall, Kameido Tenjin Shrine
Koto, TokyoKanto
Colorful chrysanthemums surrounding the main hall
Kameido Tenjin Shrine enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning, and is also famous for its wisteria festival. Because Michizane is said to have loved chrysanthemums, the shrine has long held chrysanthemum-related events, and the imperial court once held a 'Zangiku no En' banquet for viewing chrysanthemums while composing poetry. Each autumn, carefully grown chrysanthemums are displayed surrounding the front of the main hall, free for visitors to enjoy. Near the end of the festival, a 'Chrysanthemum Festival Concert' featuring members of the New Japan Philharmonic is held on the grounds, combining the colors of chrysanthemums with music in this autumn tradition.
