Hina dolls in samurai residences

About This Event

Known as the 'Little Kyoto of Michinoku (Northern Japan),' Kakunodate's historic samurai district serves as the backdrop for this hina doll festival, with approximately 30 venues displaying dolls passed down through generations since the Edo period. The refined dolls, influenced by Kyoto culture, speak to the depth of Kakunodate's samurai heritage. Starting from the Machikado community station, guided hina-meguri tours (reservation required) offer an efficient way to explore the displays. The Kakunodate Oshie-making workshop (1,500 yen) lets visitors try their hand at this traditional craft. The combination of snow-covered samurai residences and elegant hina dolls creates a uniquely Tohoku atmosphere.
