Nanakusa-gayu porridge made with herbs foraged by local children
Residents of Kochi's Kurenono and Shigekura districts formed the Kyujuu Community Council, which holds this annual January event. Local children lead the way, foraging wild herbs and nanakusa in the satoyama hills, then cooking and sharing them with residents. Positioned as a food-discovery project in the 2016 Kyujuu community plan, it lets residents experience local nature and ingredients while building ties among neighbors. The council's newsletter (hosted on the Kochi city site) lists its 2026 fiscal-year schedule with "Jan 10: 32nd Spring Nanakusa Festa." The venue varies by year; past events have been held in a fallow paddy field in the Kurenono area.
