In Asao Ward, Kawasaki, the "Asao Traditional Nanakusa Porridge Gathering," hosted by the Asao Ward Cultural Association, is held every January 7 at 11:00 in the plaza in front of the ward office. Following the January 7 tradition of eating nanakusa porridge for good health, the Asao version distinctively adds grilled mochi, using locally grown rice and vegetables. The free porridge is served to the first 1,000 visitors while supplies last. New Year songs, traditional music and games such as Kawasaki karuta and hanetsuki are also part of the event, which has been held in the ward office plaza every year since 2004.
