Rekifune River, upstream of Taiki Bridge
Taiki, HokkaidoHokkaido
230 streamers over Rekifune, one of Japan's clearest rivers
The Rekifune River in Taiki Town, Hiroo District, Hokkaido, has been repeatedly named one of Japan's clearest rivers by the Ministry of the Environment. Since 1991 about 236 carp streamers — donated by local households — have been strung across the river's full width just upstream of Taiki Bridge each spring. Marking its 30th edition in 2026, the event announces the arrival of spring with colorful streamers swimming against the backdrop of the still-snowy Hidaka Mountains. A mini event is held on Children's Day (May 5) with stalls and hands-on activities for kids. A beloved seasonal tradition in Taiki, the self-styled 'space town' of Hokkaido.
