Shimanto River Koinobori River Crossing

Togawa, Shimanto, Kochi

Venue: Shimanto River, Togawa Area

Mid-Apr – Mid-May, 2026

This tradition started in 1974 at the Shimanto River in Kochi Prefecture to fulfill children's dreams. About 500 koinobori span approximately 650m above the river known as 'Japan's last clear stream,' creating a nationally famous scenic view. The site is recognized as the birthplace of the koinobori river crossing tradition in Japan. A local festival 'Yottekoi Shimanto' is held on May 3.
