21-tier, 600 dolls at castle gate
The highlight of this festival in Akizuki — known as the 'Little Kyoto of Chikuzen' — is the outdoor display of approximately 600 hina dolls arranged on 21 tiers along the stone steps in front of the castle's long gate (nagaya-mon). The dolls on red felt-covered steps framed by cherry blossom buds create a spectacular scene that is rare even nationally for its scale as an outdoor display. The outdoor exhibition takes place on weekends, holidays, and March 3, while weekday displays are hosted inside shops throughout the castle town. It is a beloved spring tradition set against the historic castle town backdrop.
