Arcade-wide Tanabata decorations and wish strips
An annual Tanabata decoration event in Sasebo's Yonkacho district, home to Japan's longest straight shopping arcade ('Saruku City 4○3'). Colorful Tanabata ornaments hang throughout the arcade, and shoppers can write wishes on provided strips to tie to bamboo. The event also features a children's calligraphy contest and Tanabata-themed paintings by local kindergarteners, letting the whole community enjoy the season. Held in the covered arcade, it can be enjoyed rain or shine, with wish strips set up through about July 7—an easygoing downtown Tanabata to drop by while shopping.
