The Kiyokawa Checkpoint Tanabata Festival is held in early July (July 1-5 in 2026) at the Kiyokawa Checkpoint in Kiyokawa History Park in Shonai Town, Yamagata. In the historic district of Kiyokawa, which once flourished through river transport on the Mogami River, colorful Tanabata decorations handmade by local children fill the halls in a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
