Colorful Tanabata streamers waving across the main street
The Osaki Furukawa Festival, a summer tradition since 1947, is held in central Osaki in early August. The 78th edition in 2026 was consolidated into a single day, August 2, with the Osaki Fireworks Festival held the evening before on August 1. On festival day, vivid Tanabata streamers wave across the main shopping street stretching from Furukawa Station, joined by Furukawa Odori dancing, a creative mikoshi parade, and powerful Furukawa taiko drumming. Craft fairs and sister-city food stalls fill the Asumo community center and city-hall parking lot. Loved as northern Miyagi's leading Tanabata festival after Sendai, it sits a five-minute walk from Furukawa Shinkansen Station.
