Yogo Chrysanthemum Show at Zenyoji Temple

Zenyoji is a temple of the Buzan branch of Shingon Buddhism standing near the Edogawa River, familiar locally as Koiwa Fudoson. In its grounds grows the Yogo Pine, a tree said to be over 600 years old whose branches spread some 31 metres east to west and 28 metres north to south; it is a nationally designated natural monument and often called the finest pine in Japan. The Yogo Chrysanthemum Show, named after the tree, has been held every autumn since 1967 and is run by the temple's Yogo chrysanthemum society, filling the grounds with more than 1,000 plants each year. Its centrepiece is a grand chrysanthemum bed in the temple's own yogo style, built up from small-flowered varieties, shown alongside competition entries of potted specimens, cascades and bonsai forms. The 2026 show runs from 19 October to 23 November, with the judging held on 6 November, and can be viewed from 8:30 to 16:00. From the south exit of JR Koiwa Station, take a Keisei bus to Edogawa Byoin-mae and walk three minutes, or walk about 20 minutes from Keisei Edogawa Station; visitor parking is available in front of the guest hall and the Nio gate. Seeing a natural-monument pine and a grand chrysanthemum bed in the same temple grounds is a sight unique to this show.
