Nagano Tanabata Festival

Held throughout the Gondo arcade in central Nagano City, Nagano, this Tanabata festival takes place over the summer along Gondo, a leading shopping arcade near the approach to Zenkoji Temple. Beautiful illuminations modeled on Orihime, Hikoboshi, and the constellation Cygnus light up the arcade ceiling, inviting visitors into a story of the night sky. Colorful Tanabata decorations and wish strips, handmade by nearby shops, schools, children, and the elderly, line the entire arcade, brightening the town with warm, handcrafted ornaments. The Gondo shopping street Tanabata sale is also held during the period, drawing shoppers and locals in this Nagano summer tradition. The 2026 dates are estimated from the previous year.
