100 koinobori coloring a gentle satoyama river
A locally run koinobori display along the Nihogawa River in the Niho district of northeastern Yamaguchi City. About 100 carp streamers, gathered inside and outside the district, have been flown each spring for many years by local volunteers who wanted to 'give energy to the children.' The colorful carp swimming above the gentle satoyama river signal the arrival of spring and have become a regional symbol, peaking around Children's Day and drawing photographers. Retired koinobori are still being accepted as donations via the Niho Regional Exchange Center (083-929-0105).
