Koinobori above the Shakadogawa River in downtown Sukagawa
Sukagawa City, Fukushima has hosted this annual koinobori display since fiscal 1987. Centered around Children's Day (May 5), ropes are strung above the Shakadogawa River that runs through downtown, and carp streamers swim overhead for roughly a month. The display typically runs 31 days from early April to early May, stretching from Sukagawa Central Gymnasium toward Suigaoka Park. Reusing koinobori donated by residents, the event has been a beloved symbol of Sukagawa's spring for decades. Sukagawa is also the hometown of Eiji Tsuburaya (director behind Ultraman), and can be combined with a walking tour.
