800 koinobori with the Natural Monument 'Timber Rock' backdrop
Held from late April through Golden Week at Zaimokuiwa Park in Shiroishi, Miyagi. About 800 koinobori are displayed above the Shiroishi River against the stunning backdrop of Zaimokuiwa—a nationally designated Natural Monument featuring columnar jointing about 65m high and 100m wide. Started as a wish for recovery after the Great East Japan Earthquake, this display of colorful carp streamers against the dramatic rock wall and fresh green valley has become a popular spot for photography enthusiasts.
