Tying wishes to bamboo at a shrine famed for matchmaking
Set on the mid-slope of Mt. Orihime and enshrining seven deities of matchmaking, Ashikaga Orihime Shrine holds its 'Tanabata tanzaku' display from late June to early August. The 'Tanabata amulet' given at the shrine office doubles as a wish strip; visitors write a wish on the back and tie it to bamboo on the grounds. The strips are displayed through the period and ritually burned in late August. Evening illumination adds to the magic, paired with sweeping views over Ashikaga and the Watarase River. The popular limited-period goshuin seal draws crowds to this fitting Tanabata spot.
