Susaki Machikado Gallery (former Miura Residence)
Susaki, KochiShikoku
Straw-horse Tanabata decorations and a lantern fair
Susaki Tanabata Kazari centers on the Susaki Machikado Gallery (the former Miura Residence), a repurposed old merchant house. Traditional Susaki/Kochi bamboo decorations and Tanabata ornaments using lucky straw 'wara-uma' horses are displayed indoors, and visitors can tie wish strips to bamboo. On Saturday night, a 'Tanabata Lantern Fair' offers games like target shooting and candy fishing. A wara-uma workshop and the concurrent 'Lanterns in Love' exhibition of about 150 lanterns from Hoi An, Vietnam, fill the Taisho-era townhouse with a magical atmosphere—a special few days where local tradition meets exotic charm.
