Sengan-en Garden (Shimazu family villa)
Kagoshima, KagoshimaKyushu
A 10m+ Tanabata decoration set against Sakurajima
At Sengan-en, the Shimazu family's villa and a nationally designated scenic site, this event recreates the family's Tanabata custom. Based on writings by the 30th household head Shimazu Tadashige—who recalled that in the Meiji era two bamboo were cut from the hill behind only at Tanabata and stood to the north and south—a five-colored Tanabata decoration over 10 meters tall is raised within the garden overlooking Sakurajima and Kinko Bay. Against grand scenery and a historic feudal garden, it is a rare chance to experience the Shimazu family's Tanabata. Held for a few days from July 7, with admission required.
