Kanzo-Yashiki May Display Exhibition

Koshu, Yamanashi

Venue: Former Kōno Family Residence (Kanzo-Yashiki)

May 1 – Jun 1, 2026

Held every spring at the 'Former Kōno Family Residence (Kanzo-Yashiki)', a nationally designated Important Cultural Property in Koshu, Yamanashi, the special exhibition 'Kanzo-Yashiki May Display: Celebrating Tango no Sekku at Kanzo-Yashiki' runs from May 1 (Fri) to June 1 (Mon), 2026. About 100 seasonal dolls — armor displays, helmet displays and warrior dolls from the mid-Edo period through the Heisei and Reiwa eras — fill the tatami rooms of the old manor. Kanzo-Yashiki is the residence of the Kōno family, who supplied the shogunate with the medicinal plant licorice (kanzō) from the early Edo period; its enormous silk-farming gable roof and stone walls are impressive. Drawing on the know-how developed for the 'Hina Dolls and Peach Blossom Festival' held earlier, the exhibition is a Koshu spring highlight. Closed Tuesdays (the next day if a holiday), and May 7–10.
