Central Takaoka City
Takaoka, ToyamaChubu
A roughly 10m jumbo Tanabata and illuminated lantern decorations at night
Held in central Takaoka City, Toyama, in early August according to the old calendar, this is one of Hokuriku's largest Tanabata festivals. In 2026 the town is awash in Tanabata mood from August 1 to 8. About 1,000 decorations of various sizes adorn the streets, shining vividly against the summer sky by day and glowing magically as large lantern Tanabata are illuminated at night. The biggest highlight is a jumbo Tanabata about 10 meters tall, while wish strips, citizen-made lanterns, petite Tanabata, and My Tanabata further enliven the event. Located right by Takaoka Station on the Ainokaze Toyama Railway, it draws many residents and tourists.
