Giant handmade papier-mache characters each year
Begun in 1954, the Asagaya Tanabata Festival is one of Tokyo's leading Tanabata events, running August 7-11 in 2026 (70th edition). Along the Asagaya Pearl Center arcade stretching from JR Asagaya Station, traditional bamboo streamers are joined by elaborate handmade papier-mache figures shaped like the year's popular characters, which hang overhead as visitors stroll the covered arcade. With numerous food and game stalls during the Obon period, it draws some of the largest crowds in Tokyo with a nostalgic downtown atmosphere.
